March Reading Recap

Another month, another round of books!! I think I read two less than the month previous, but who’s counting? March was a rather rough month for me (I went to the ER and a beloved family member passed away, so the books I wanted to read either hit a little too hard or I just couldn’t focus on them. So, some of these reviews aren’t as consistent as each other. Bear with me.

Such a Fun Age – Kiley Reid

One of the characters reminded me of the main character from R. F. Kuang’s Yellowface—a white woman who is so convinced she is doing the right thing, will jump through hoops to try and justify her actions. I found it fascinating. And also very relatable too—being in your mid-twenties and not having a clue who you really are or worrying about money troubles. It hit very close to home.

A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet – Becky Chambers

Maybe science fiction isn’t for me?? But this is the second book I’ve DNF’d this year. I enjoyed the characters, but it was hard to follow the plot and the world-building (universe building?). I also wasn’t a big fan of one of the relationships in the story, but that’s just me.

She Drives Me Crazy – Kelly Quindlen

I’ve been reading a lot of sports romances lately, and not on purpose. Anyways, this one was sweet. It did bring me back to my middle school basketball days, which was something.

Penance – Eliza Clark

I was SO excited for this book, and it was on my holds list on Libby for quite a while. When it became available, I immediately stopped the currently book I was reading and started Penance. I admit I wasn’t a part of the target audience (true-crime obsessed Tumblr girls), but I still enjoyed the different voices and points of view. I do wish that the author added a bit more of how the author of the fictional suffered the consequences of how his book impacted the families, but still a gripping read.

The Mothers – Brit Bennett

Intense. Startling. Real. There’s not much else I can say about this book, only it is super impacting and YOU SHOULD READ IT.

Home Field Advantage – Dahlia Adler

Lotta enemies to lovers…or just “misunderstanding to lovers”…either way I enjoyed this for the most part. I was kind of hoping it would be like that one Tumblr post of the cheerleader fixing her quarterback girlfriend’s hair, but nope.

The World We Make – N. K. Jemisin

O.M.G. THE SEQUEL!!! AMAZING!!!! I can totally understand Jemisin’s choice for making this planned trilogy into a duology—there’s plenty of space for a sequel, but everything is wrapped up well. Everything I loved from the first book—music, audio effects—was in this one. Oh my gosh and one of the final battles was so fantastic!! I was listening to the final few hours at the gym and at the store, and I can only imagine the faces I was making during those scenes. Also, if you’re listening on the audiobook (and you absolutely should), STAY for the credits, there’s an awesome easter egg you CANNOT miss!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue – V. E. Schwab

I am going to make a very unpopular, very HOT take about this book. So, y’all already know about my qualms with enemies to lovers, now get ready for my dislike of…whatever this love triangle was. Addie…liked the Darkness? When Henry was literally RIGHT THERE?? The concept for the book was great, but Addie and Luc’s obsession with each other was distracting and honestly kinda uncomfortable. Truth be told, I don’t like the whole “obsessed lover” trope. To me, it’s not romantic, it’s scary.
